When you make your own cable you want to know if the connectors are connected and connect correctly, you can easily check this in seconds using a network cable tester. Even when you lay a network cable through the wall, you can use a cable tester to check whether it is connected correctly. The cable tester is an electronic device that sends small current signals through the wires, the cable tester then checks whether the signals arrive at the other end properly and in the correct order, going through the wires one by one, so if a wire is not connected properly, the LED on the cable tester will not light up, when the wires are not in the correct order you can see this on the network cable tester because the LEDs will not light up one by one.

So a cable tester is an indispensable tool.
