Cat6a: the next step after Cat6

The Cat6a cable is many times more powerful than its little brother Cat6. The bandwidth is 2x as high (500Mhz vs 250Mhz), allowing more data to be processed simultaneously. The speed is as much as 10x as high (10Gbit vs 1Gbit). Many companies can benefit from the speed of the Cat 6a cable, but even within households, this cable can offer a solution. For instance, when many people simultaneously demand a lot of performance (gaming, streaming, VOIP applications, etc.). Do check first whether all your network devices can deliver 10Gbit (because the weakest link determines the maximum speed!).

Do you need a Cat6a cable?

Companies can absolutely benefit from all the advantages of the Cat6a cable and for them it is also extremely important to be well prepared for the future.

For households/individuals, the Cat 6a is in many cases considerably oversized. Don't get us wrong: being prepared for the future is never wrong, but realise that the Cat6a achieves speeds of up to 10Gbit. In 95% of cases, you have a weaker link in your chain! For example, when your router can 'only' handle 1Gbit.

Our recommendation for households is therefore the Cat6 S/FTP cable (1Gbit/second, 250Mhz bandwidth and double shielded).

Different variants

But, back to the Cat6a! The main variants are:

Cat6a U/UTP (unshielded)
Cat6a S/FTP (double shielded)

Always opt for a shielded ('FTP') cable if it will be located along possible sources of interference, such as power cables and COAX cables, or if you suffer from interference from e.g. magnetic waves.
